Gwen and Randy Williams have had numerous champions in Indiana. It appears they may have a new one in the making.
WRs Mynameisrip (photo) topped a total of 51 two-year-olds vying for a spot in the $235,600 final of the Miss Roxie Little Futurity set for Oct. 26 during Indiana Champions Day.
The race holds a little more meaning for the 16th running as it now holds a Restricted Grade 3 status, joining the QHRAI Stallion Service Auction Futurity as the first two Indiana stakes upgraded to Graded Stakes status in the 22-year history of racing at Horseshoe Indianapolis.
WRs Mynameisrip kicked off the first of six trials on the card for the Miss Roxie Little Futurity. When the gate sprung open, WRs Mynameisrip sprang into action for jockey Diego Villamil Bocanegra. The gelding was large and in charge from the start, vying for the top spot with AP Political Patriot and Francisco Quintero to his inside. Midway through the 350-yard dash, WRs Mynameisrip began to overpower the field and got the advantage, winning by three-quarters of a length in 17.937 seconds.
Beach First and Rolando Pina moved up the inside to finish second in a four-horse photo, just a neck ahead of AP Political Patriot for third.
WRs Mynameisrip broke his maiden this spring at Sandy Ridge at The Red Mile and added another win to his credentials in the prep for the Miss Roxie Little Futurity Trials. The freshman son of Tarzanito has some rich maternal bloodlines. His dam, WRs Hava Cricket, is the full sister to the standout WRs Valentino, winner of 15 races and more than $550,000 so far in his career.
“She (WRs Hava Cricket) is a great big mare,” noted Randy Williams. “She won out here at 440 by open lengths, but just couldn’t do much shorter than that. But she has some cracker jack babies at home. We have a weanling full brother to ‘Rip’ at home. We named him WRs Shadow Dancer. We have cameras in the stalls and can watch from our house. When he was just a few days old, his shadow would show up on the wall, and he would try his best to dodge it, like a cuttin’ horse. If racing doesn’t work out for him, maybe he can be a cuttin’ horse.”
WRs Mynameisrip is special in a lot of ways to the Williams. Besides representing one of the hottest bloodlines in their operation in recent years, Gwen took a liking to the feisty colt from the start and picked out his name.
“I don’t name a lot of them, but I named him,” added Gwen. “He was sassy when he was little. We are ‘Yellowstone’ fans, so the name ‘Rip’ just fit him.”
WRs Mynameisrip paid $11.60 for the win. He is trained by Natasha Perez, former Quarter Horse jockey who is now finding success as a trainer. She joined him in the winner’s circle atop her pony after leading him to post for the race.
